How To Make Your Own Marshmallow Shooter

Keeping your kids entertained can be tricky, but crafts are always there to burn away a few hours. Your only issue now is trying to find new and interesting things to make with your kids – so how about a marshmallow shooter?

Marshmallow shooters are great fun and they will continue to keep you kids entertained long after they have made them!

So, if you want to try making your own marshmallow shooters with your kids at home, check out the ultimate guide below!

Making Marshmallow Shooters: What You Will Need

If you are seriously into your crafts, then you know the drill by now – gather all of your supplies and materials first!

So many people have been caught out because they can’t find this one specific tool half way through their crafts session, and this can only result in serious disappointment.

So, check out the information below to make sure you have everything you need ready to make your own marshmallow shooters!

First up, you will need balloons. We’re not talking about fancy foil balloons – just some good, old fashioned rubber balloons you can blow up with your breath at home.

These are super easy to find and purchase from all kinds of general stores so head to the party aisle and grab a pack for little cost. The more colorful your balloons are, the better your marshmallow shooters will be!

The next thing you will need are some cake push pop containers. Now, these will be harder to find in store places like Walmart or Target should stock them.

If you can’t find them anywhere in store, then here are some available for low cost at Amazon.

The final two supplies you will need is a strong pair of scissors, and the most important supply – mini marshmallows!

Trying to shoot full sized marshmallows from your marshmallow shooter won’t have the same effect so try and get a bag of mini marshmallows.

If mini marshmallows are a no-go (for example, if you are vegan), then the mini marshmallows can easily be swapped out for some other small treat, or something small like peas or beans.

Once you have all of your supplies ready, it’s time to make your very own marshmallow shooter!

How To Make A Marshmallow Shooter

Now that everything is ready, you can start making marshmallow shooters with your kids.

As a safety precaution, we would recommend that adults handle the scissors unless your child is old enough and responsible enough to handle it themselves.

To start off, you first need to take an empty balloon each and tie a knot in the end. You don’t need to blow it up – just keep the balloon empty of air and tie a knot.

Once that’s done, you need to grab your scissors and cut the balloon in half, keeping the end with the knot in it.

Next, take your cake push pop container and remove the lid and stick. Put these to one side and just keep the tubular mid section of the cake push pop container.

Take the knotted half of your balloon and stretch it over the end of your cake push pop container – kind of like stretching a sock over a foot (see also “How To Make Your Own Arm Warmers? (With Old Socks)“).

Once that’s done and secure, take a mini marshmallow and drop it in the end of your cake push pop container where the stick usually goes.

Hold onto the container and the balloon with one hand, and pull back on the tied end with the other. Once you let go, your mini marshmallow will shoot out! Watch it fly!

And that’s it – you have made a DIY marshmallow shooter. Now, your kids will be able to pelt marshmallowed wherever they choose for hours on end (Good God, what have we done?).

Can You Decorate Your Marshmallow Shooter?

So, you’ve done all the simple steps to make a marshmallow shooter but perhaps your kids are left feeling a little underwhelmed.

Cake push pop containers are not much to look at, so is there any way you can decorate them first?

Of course!

If you want to decorate your marshmallow shooters, then we’d recommend you decorate the cake push pop container first before you turn it into a marshmallow shooter.

You can use any regular paint and paint brushes, just make sure that you lay down plenty of newspapers and give each child a smock so they don’t ruin their clothes.

All you will need is some paint and paintbrushes, but you can also add extra decorations such as glitter and stickers.

We wouldn’t recommend you use markers or Sharpies to draw on the cake push pop container instead – they won’t stay onto the plastic like paint will, and any decorations and colors you all are likely to transfer and smudge.

So, the best material to use for decorating your marshmallow shooter is paint!

When To Make Your Marshmallow Shooters

Marshmallow shooters are a ton of fun for kids to make and play with after. This can be a great craft activity you and your children can enjoy during the summer break, or during any vacation time.

They’re also great to hand out to kids during parties such as a 4th of July picnic or barbecue, Christmas parties, and birthday parties.

Basically, they’re quick to make and fun to use, so whenever you and your kids have an hour or two to burn at home, you can pull out the supplies and get crafting!

Final Thoughts

So, making your own DIY marshmallow shooter is super, super easy. All you need is a balloon, a cake push up container, a pair of scissors and some marshmallows for shooting!

Because of this, it’s one of the best quick craft activities you can do with your kids to keep them entertained for a short period of time. If you want to, you can even paint the containers beforehand so they look amazing!

Follow the guide above and give them a try for yourself! Good luck!
